PROVERBS 9 (KJV)
1) Wisdom hath built her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: 2) She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. 3) She hath sent forth her maidens: she cries upon the highest places of the city,
4) Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wants understanding, she says to him, 5) Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. 6) Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
4) Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wants understanding, she says to him, 5) Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. 6) Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
7) He that reproves a scorner gets to himself shame: and he that rebukes a wicked man gets himself a blot. 8) Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9) Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of The Holy is understanding.
11) For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. 12) If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scorn, thou alone shalt bear it.
11) For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. 12) If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scorn, thou alone shalt bear it.
13) A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knows nothing. 14) For she sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, 15) To call passengers who go right on their ways: 16) Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wants understanding, she says to him, 17) Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
COMMENTARY
Verse 1) the "seven pillars" on which Wisdom has built Her house is found in James 3, verse 17:
"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy." So, the central pillar is purity. The six outside pillars are 1) peaceable, 2) gentle, 3) reasonable (or easy to be entreated), 4) full of mercy and good fruits, 5) humble (without partiality), and finally 6) sincere (without hypocrisy).

Verses 2,3) Wisdom's invitation is given in plain sight of the masses, not on some dark back street. Those hungry for the insights can come and feast until satisfied. There is plenty of information in the world about the world that does not satisfy a soul that hungers for God.
Verses 4-6) The world regards those with degrees, culture, and intellect. Wisdom makes the simple people smarter than any Rhodes Scholar. Take D.L. Moody for instance: He was uneducated and unsophisticated, and not ordained; yet he had wisdom and insight.
The Old Testament is filled with stories of why we should forsake the foolish and live.
7 & 8) It is folly to correct fools and the wicked. The wicked resent criticism of their behavior and seek revenge. There is no wisdom in them, only pride.
10) The fear of The Lord. We have heard this phrase in one way or another all of our lives, but what does it mean? John Phillips says that it is when we experience our conversion, which leads to consecration which leads to holiness which ultimately leads to happiness. How can you fear God if you don't acknowledge that He exists? William D. Eisenhower explains it this way in Christianity Today:
" Unfortunately, many of us presume that the world is the ultimate threat and that God's function is to offset it. How different this is from the biblical position that God is far scarier than the world....When we assume that the world is the ultimate threat, we give it unwarranted power, for in truth, the world's threats are temporary. When we expect God to balance the stress of the world, we reduce Him to the world's equal...As I walk with the Lord, I discover that God poses an ominous threat to my ego, but not to me. He rescues me from my delusions, so He may reveal the truth that sets me free. He casts me down, only to lift me up again. He sits in judgment of my sin, but forgives me nevertheless. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but love from the Lord is its completion."
