PROVERBS 1 (KJV)

1) The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2) To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3) To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4) To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. 5) A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: 6) To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8) My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: 9) For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10) My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. 11) If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: 12) Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: 13) We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 14) Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: 15) My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16) For their feet run to evil, and make hast to shed blood. 17) Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. 18) And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. 19) So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20) Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: 21) She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, 22) How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23) Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24) Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25) But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26) I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27) When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28) Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29) For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: 30) They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31) Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32) For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. 33) But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
The first 9 chapters of The Proverbs deal with moral issues. It is a great study. Never again allow someone to tell you that babies didn't come with instructions. Study the Proverbs.
COMMENTARY
Most of the Proverbs were written by Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived. In 2 Chronicles 1, beginning with verse 7, we read: In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. 8) And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead. 9) Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. 10) Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
11) And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: 12) Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

IN DEPTH STUDY
1) King Solomon was King David and Bathsheba's son. By the time he was born, King David had turned back to his God and repented of his shortcomings. He was a man "after God's own heart". So we can pour ourselves over the books of Samuel, Chronicles, and Psalms to try to understand some of what King Solomon knew about King David. He could also just ask him.
The Hebrew word for "proverbs" is "mishlai" which is derived from the root word mashail which means "to rule". Therefore, the mishlai are words and sayings that are supposed to rule and govern our life. The Proverbs are not just a collection of bits of human wisdom, but rather they contain God's rules.
2 - 6) King Solomon outlines his objective for writing the Proverbs;
2) "to know wisdom and instruction." the Hebrew word for "wisdom" refers to a person's ability to make the right choices at the opportune times. The word "instruction" means "discipline". So, we are to use our disciplined mind to see the pros and cons of an issue and be willing to learn by correction. But in order to receive truth, we need to be willing to acknowledge it when it is presented to us. The word "understanding is usually translated "discernment". Some people refuse to see the truth when it is staring them in the face. Have you heard the saying, "There are none so blind as those who will not see"?
3) When we do perceive the truth, we must also be willing to accommodate it. The example given for this refers us to John 5: the man with the long-term chronic disease (paralysis) who could not get into the pool by himself and had apparently been sitting by it for years. Jesus came along and asked him if he wanted to be healed. The man went on and on about how he couldn't get into the pool before others when the waters were stirred, so he waited. When he finally accommodated the Truth of Jesus, he was healed. Simple.

4) The simple man, naïve, unsuspecting, will believe anything they see or hear. In the television series, The Big Valley, Nick Barkley was trying to prove how one of the workers on his ranch had his limits of the ridiculously unbelievable things he would believe. Well, it happened, that when Nick presented the man with an unbelievable lie, the man believed it. What's more, the rumor spread rapidly, even though it was too incredulous for anyone to believe, they did!
5) A wise man is never too sophisticated to learn from someone who is credible.
7) To fear the LORD is translated: to reverence the LORD. There is none who is as wise as God. It is our task to trust Him.
8,9) We are instructed to listen to instruction, contemplate on it, have it nearby to put into action. Wise counsel will bless us. When we invest the time into obtaining wisdom, it will surely improve our life. Wisdom comes from knowing the Holy Bible.
10, 11) Don't willfully consent to doing wrong. There is a war going on for your soul. Satan says, "Come, let's have some fun." Jesus says, "Come, welcome Me into your life." Which will you choose? You can't serve both Masters.
