PROVERBS 12 (KJV)
1) Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge:
but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
2) A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD:
but a man of wicked devices will He condemn.
3) A man shall not be established by wickedness:
but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.
4) A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband:
but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
5) The thoughts of the righteous are right:
but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.
6) The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood:
but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.
7) The wicked are overthrown, and are not:
but the house of the righteous shall stand.
8) A man shall be commended according to his wisdom:
but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.
9) He that is despised, and hath a servant,
is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.
10) A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast:
but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
11) He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread:
but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.
12) The wicked desireth the net of evil men:
but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.
13) The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips:
but the just shall come out of trouble.
14) A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth:
and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.
15) The way of a fool is right in his own eyes:
but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
16) A fool's wrath is presently known:
but a prudent man covereth shame.
17) He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness:
but a false witness deceit.
18) There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword:
but the tongue of the wise is health.
19) The lip of truth shall be established for ever:
but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
20) Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil:
but to the counsellors of peace is joy
21) There shall no evil happen to the just:
but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.
22) Lying lips are abomination to the LORD:
but they that deal truly are His delight.
23) A prudent man concealeth knowledge:
but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
24) The hand of the diligent shall bear rule:
but the slothful shall be under tribute.
25) Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop:
but a good word maketh it glad.
26) The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour:
but the way of the wicked seduceth them.
27) The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting:
but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
28) In the way of righteousness is life:
and in the pathway thereof there is no death.
COMMENTARY
Verse 1: The classic example of the wise man accepting reproof is when King David committed adultery and murder. Surely you have heard the story of King David and Bathsheba. You can read it for yourself in 2 Samuel chapter 11. In chapter 12, comes the reproof. King David was publicly accused of his sin and immediately confessed and awaited punishment. To his astonishment, he was
not struck down. He had a contrite heart and confessed his sin. To my amazement, I have also been forgiven of my sins through nothing I have done, but by what was done by my Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Psalms 51, verses 16 and 17, King David writes, "You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17) My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart You, God, will not despise"

Verse 2) Barnabas was a good man (Acts 11:24). He was the man who supported Saul of Tarsus after his meeting with Jesus on the Damascus Road. Barnabas sheltered Saul, who was then called Paul, promoted him, preached with him. It was Barnabas who introduced Paul to the followers of The Way, who Saul was determined to exterminate. Eventually, Barnabas took a backseat to Paul and was not jealous of him.
Yes, Barnabas loved The Lord. He loved Him so much, that he realized that The Apostles were concentrating on sowing into The Kingdom rather than making money to survive, so he sold some of his land and laid the money at the feet of the Apostles. When Ananias and his wife Sapphira saw the praise Barnabas received for this, they conspired together to sell some of their land and do the same. But, they decided to hide the fact that they were going to keep some of the proceeds for themselves. They wanted to "act righteous". The Holy Spirit alerted Peter about the deception and they were denounced. In fact, The Holy Spirit killed them both that very day! Woe to those who "act righteous" today! So, keep the breastplate of righteousness in place that your heart cannot be hardened or deceived.

Verse 4) "a virtuous woman" can be found in Proverbs 31. If a woman does not love her man, if she is selfish and self-serving, she is not considered his "help mate", rather his adversary.
Verse 9 has to do with "high living", coveting a higher social status than what you can afford. I knew a man who lived in expensive apartment in the better part of town and drove a new fancy car but his family ate hamburger meat and bologna at home. He strove to impress with his "status" possessions rather than provide necessities at home. This verse addresses that man. It is to be desired to live in a lower social status and be able to provide for your family, and maybe even afford to occasionally hire some help (housekeeper, yard care), than it is to acquire much debt you cannot pay for to give the appearance of wealth.
Verse 12) The wicked desires the gain of evil people. It is desired to make thousands of dollars a day in drug sales or human trafficking over laboring at a 9-5 job for hundreds of dollars a week. However, the laborer sleeps better with a clear consciousness. The root of the righteous yields fruit. Which person would you listen to about the life changing power of Jesus Christ...the drug dealer or the laborer? There is more to life than money. Money is not an acceptable currency in heaven.
Verse 15) How can we be right, when we have inherited a evil, wicked heart from Adam? Jesus once asked, "Why do you call me 'good'? Only God is good." Luke 18:19, Mark 10, 18, and Matthew 19:17. Since we are not good, how can we possibly be right? Only a fool is right in his own mind. The rest of us seek Truth (God's Word) to counsel us.
Verse 18) There are people who will "cut you up in little pieces" with what they say to you and about you. There are people who speak peace and love to you.
Verse 22) We can reference Proverbs 6: 16 - 19 for this verse:
16) These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto Him:
17) A proud look, A LYING TONGUE, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18) An heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19) A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.
