but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

COMMENTARY
Definitions: betimes: early, quickly, according to biblestudytools.com. So, when correcting the child, do this immediately after the infraction so as not to be misunderstood what the punishment is for.
loathsome: causing hatred or disgust; repulsive
Verse 1) This is why we work so hard with our children. We have those who listen to their parents and take what we say and act on our instruction. Then we have children who resist instruction without even considering that we love them and want the best for them, so we try punishing them that they may learn to obey. It is so much better for them when they grow older if they are taught to obey and respect authority when they are young.
Verse 2) speaks of the power of the tongue. If you have a foul mouth, you are less likely to be gainfully employed and less likely to have a flourishing business. Don't think that transgressors have a pleasant life, either. Even the heads of drug cartels have a target on them; not only by others in the cartels, but also by the police. How can you have a pleasant meal when so many are against you?

Verse 8) deals with ransom: people of fame, riches, etc. can raise a great sum of money when held for ransom; people without means don't have to stress about being held for ransom.
Verse 9) Jesus is the Light of the righteous (John 8:12). He rejoices, saints rejoice, all of heaven rejoices when one sinner repents (Luke 15:7). But the light of unrepentant sinners will be snuffed out for eternity. So, let me ask you: which scenario describes your life? If you want to spend eternity with Jesus in heaven, now is the time to choose. Click here for more information: https://omaswisdom.blogspot.com/p/path-to-salvation.html.
Verse 24) "Spare the rod, spoil the child." I have heard this saying frequently when I was growing up. It is here, in black and white, inspired by The Holy Spirit, that we are to use physical means to correct our children. And we are to chastise them immediately after the infraction (betimes), lest they be confused as to why they are being punished. When I showed this to my Grandson, he was in awe that we spank him only if we love him. If we hate him, we would leave him to his own devices. This does not say to abuse the children, by the way.
