PROVERBS 2 (KING JAMES VERSION)

PROVERBS 2    (KJV)

     1) My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; 2) So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3) Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4) If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5) Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

   6) For the Lord giveth wisdom:  out of His mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.  7) He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous:  He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.  8) He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of His saints.  Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.  10) When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

   11) Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:  12) To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;  13) Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; 14) Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; 15) Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:

   16) To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;  17) Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.  18) For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.  19) None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

   20) That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.  21) For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.  22) But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

COMMENTARY

   The definition of the word "froward" as defined on wiktionary.org:  disobedient, contrary, unmanageable; difficult to deal with; with an evil disposition.

   Verses 1 - 4:  How often do you read the Holy Bible?  How often do you study it in depth?  How often do you watch television/sports/youtube or tik tok videos?  Entertainment such as television adds nothing to nourish your soul much like drinking sodas add nothing to nourish your body.  Spend your time in God's Word and you will be blessed with wisdom and knowledge.  Seek to increase your wisdom even more than you seek to increase your bank account.  Wisdom is worth so much more.

   Wisdom and knowledge are of God.  No one else invented wisdom or knowledge.  Wisdom was with God from the beginning.  How else could He have created all that He did?  Surely He did not consult a dead prophet, spiritual leader, politician, entrepreneur, or philanthropist.  No, God alone is the origin of wisdom and He gives it to whom He may.  He has hidden it, so the wise seek it.

   Only those who find wisdom have stability in their lives, no matter the situation.  The object of wisdom is to protect us from instability and the onslaughts of life.  Finally, the outcome of wisdom is preservation.  He keeps the paths of judgment and preserves the way of His saints when we are obedient to Him.  And we can only be obedient when we have the wisdom to know His ways.

Verses 5 - 8:  When we have a "fear" of the LORD, it is a constructive fear that leads us to trust Him; and trusting Him leads us to love Him.  It is not a slavish, debilitating fear but rather a reverential awe of Him.  Imagine when Isaiah found himself in front of God, seeing the angels around His throne, sinless angels, worshipping God.  Isaiah declared, "Woe is me"  The moment he confessed himself to be lost and undone, he was cleansed and commissioned in God's army!  Isaiah 5: 11, 18, 20-22 and 6: 1-13)

   The Lord is the origin of wisdom.  No man who has ever lived invented wisdom.  No leader of religions, or politicians, educators, scientists, nor philosopher can ever depart the wisdom of God, Who is the origin of wisdom.

   The Lord lays up wisdom for the righteous.  The wicked cannot find it and the righteous have to search for it.  When we find it, it protects us from instability and the onslaughts of life.  Personally, when we received news of the worldwide pandemic of COVID, my Son told me that he was going to protect me and proceeded to give me instruction on how I was to live my life.  I informed him that that was God's job and there was no need for stress and anxiety.  Whether I lived or died was up to my God, not my Son.  Amen?  Nonetheless, I love him for loving me.

   The Lord will keep the righteous as we seek Him with all of our hearts.
