THE GREAT COMMISSION

THE GREAT COMMISSION

Jesus had made several appearances after His death to various groups and individuals.  He had directed His eleven disciples to meet Him on a mountain in Galilee.  Here is where we pick up the story:

   16) Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.

   17) When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.

   18) Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

   19) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

   20) and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."    (Matthew 28:16 - 20)  (New International Version)

And the Luke writes in Acts 1, where he speaks of the instructions Jesus gave the disciples):
   1) In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.    (Acts 1:1  New International Version)

The Apostle John writes in John 20:
   21) Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you:  as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.  (John 20:21   King James Version, public domain)

COMMENTARY

This is "the great commission", that every believer should spread the Gospel to all the world.  We should carry the message of grace to all men everywhere, while we wait for His return, according to His promise.  We are to proclaim the remission of sins to all who believe and retention of sins to those who spurn the message.

The primary message is to teach (or to make disciples of) all nations.  The secondary commission is have them baptized.  Those who receive the Word are to be baptized as the outward expression of their faith.

His presence by The Spirit was promised to all who seek to carry out His commission.  This promise does not end with the rapture, as there will be 144,000, who are selected to remain.  The Holy Spirit will empower them, enabling them to proclaim the message in power for the blessing of mankind.  Hallelujah!

Our responsibility is to carry the story of redeeming love to all men everywhere.  It is not just given to those who are official ministers with degrees from seminaries, but to every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are to endeavor to make Him known to others and so to win as many precious souls as possible while the day of grace continues.  ALL ARE CALLED TO BE WITNESSES, ACCORDING TO THEIR MEASURE.

We are to preach (Acts 10: 42), pray (Acts 13:3), and support (3 John 6-8), according to your ability.  We are to send our gifts to facilitate those who are knowledgeable enough to preach.  We are all to pray that God will save those who hear.

We actually received our commission about 2000 years ago, and so did you.  What are you doing with it?   You are encouraged to leave a comment and share with us what you are doing.  This dispensation of grace is about to come to an end.
