PROVERBS 11 (KING JAMES VERSION)

PROVERBS 11   (KJV)

   1) A false balance is abomination to the LORD:
but a just weight is His delight.

   2) When pride cometh, then cometh shame:
but with the lowly is wisdom.

   3) The integrity of the upright shall guide them:
but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

   4) Riches profit not in the day of wrath:
     but righteousness delivereth from death.

   5) The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way:
but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

   6) The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them:
but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.

   7) When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish:
and the hope of unjust men perisheth.

   8) The righteous is delivered out of trouble,
and the wicked cometh in his stead.

   9) An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour:
but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

   10) When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth:
and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

   11) By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted:
but it is overthrown my the mouth of the wicked.

   12) He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour:
but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

   13) A talebearer revealeth secrets:
but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

   14) Where no counsel  is, the people fall:
but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

   15) He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it:
and he that hateth suretiship is sure.

   16) A gracious woman retaineth honour:
     and strong men retain riches.

   17) The merciful man doeth good to his own soul:
but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh

   18) The wicked worketh a deceitful work:
but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

   19) As righteousness tendeth to life:
so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

   20) They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD:
but such as are upright in their way are His delight.

   21) Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished:
but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered

   22) As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout,
so is a fair woman which is without discretion

   23) The desire of the righteous is only good:
but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

   24) There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth;
and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

   25) The liberal soul shall be made fat:
and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

   26) He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him:
but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

   27) He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour:
but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.

   28) He that trusteth in his riches shall fall;
but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

   29) He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind:
and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

   30) The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life;
and he that winneth souls is wise.

   31) Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth:
much more the wicked and the sinner.

COMMENTARY

The definition of the word "froward" as defined on wiktionary.org:  disobedient, contrary, unmanageable; difficult to deal with; with an evil disposition.

Recompense:  something that is given to or done to thank or reward someone or to pay someone for loss or suffering.  (www.britannica.com)

Verse 1) I had to smile at the story Dr. Phillips told on this verse:  A lady went into the meat market to buy a four pound chicken.  The store keeper told her that he only had one chicken left.  He put it on the scale and it weighed three pounds.  She thanked him but declined the chicken, since it was too small.  He asked her to wait and let him look in the back of the market.  He came back holding that same chicken, put it on the scale (while depressing the scale with his finger), and it weighed four pounds.  She was delighted and told him that since he was so helpful, that she would take both chickens!  haha  That chicken came back to bite him, for sure!

Verse 2) We go to the Book of Numbers, chapter 12 for this illustration:  Miriam was the older sister of Moses and Aaron.  Miriam had been basking in the position of having the honorable and universal name of a mother in Israel.  The spirits of pride and envy attacked her.  She looked upon the Ethiopian wife of Moses with "haughty eyes".  She enjoyed her position way too much to give it up to the Ethiopian.  She stirred Aaron's resentment against the Ethiopian.
But God heard Miriam and Aaron.  He summoned the three of them to come out of the tabernacle, then He positioned Himself between them and the entrance of the tabernacle.  He let them know that Moses was not a prophet that God would communicate with in dreams and visions; but He would speak with him "mouth to mouth".  Moses was so much more than a prophet.  Miriam and Aaron "kindled" God's anger due to pride, envy, and their haughty eyes.  God gave Miriam leprosy right there as a lesson.  I pray He never has to deal with me that severely.
Moses beseeched that God heal her.  He let her keep the leprosy for a week.  Since she had leprosy, she was excommunicated for that period of time.  Moses was "lowly" and had the wisdom.

Verse 7) I participated in a funeral for an unsaved person once.  It was the saddest event I had ever witnessed.  All the hopes and goals, all the desires for the future died and was buried with her.  There was nothing after.  The loved ones just walked away.  For those of us whose hope is in Jesus, we look forward to life after death.  He conquered hell, death, and the grave.

Verse 22:  Beauty is not always synonymous with good sense.  Some women (and men) get accustomed to being treated better than they deserve based solely on their looks rather than their heart.  Just as gold jewelry in a pig's snout, so is beauty in a woman with no common sense or discretion.

Verses 24,25)  These verses are all about making money.  The more you sow (scatter), the more you reap; you have to water the crops or they fail.  When we pray, "Give us this day OUR daily bread...) this reminds us that we are to share what God gives us, whether food, money, etc., we are not to hoard.  I promise you, when you give, nobody out gives God!

Verse 26:  This verse addresses shop owners/farmers/businessmen.  To hold the corn (or any goods) until there is a shortage is to chance the populace getting mad and rebelling.
