RISE BEFORE THE ELDERLY LEVITICUS 19:32

RISE BEFORE THE ELDERLY

Back in the day, our parent taught boys to take off their hat and stand up when a lady entered the room.  We were also taught to get up and give adults our seat.  BUT DO YOU KNOW, that in the Book of Leviticus, Chapter 19, verse 32, the law given to Moses said we are to "Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God.  I am the Lord." (NIV)

That sounds pretty crazy in this day, doesn't it?  Or does it?  Let's look at it a little closer:

In Proverbs 16: 31, we read, "The hoary head (gray hair) is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." (KJV)  And in Proverbs 20:29, "The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head."  (KJV)

Well, who knew that so much was said about the elderly in The Bible!  But wait!  There's more!

Read the passage closer:  "...and revere your God."  You see, old age is a "crown of splendor" that is given by the grace of God.  When these laws were given to Israel, they were intended for the Jews to see the social realm in a religious light, since every aspect of life was subject to The Lord's command.  This is still true today for all who believe on The Lord.  The elderly was to be respected as if they were your own parent.  We all know that the first commandment related to our human relationships is to "honor your father and mother".  So, we are to honor, respect, and revere our elders.
