FOUR IN THE FIRE DANIEL 3: 24 - 30

FOUR IN THE FIRE   DANIEL 3:24-30

   (24)  Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?"
   They replied, "Certainly, O king."
   (25) He said, "Look!  I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."
   (26) Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out!  Come here!"
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, (27) and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them.  They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
   (28) Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent His angel and rescued His servants!  They trusted in Him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.  (29) Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way."
   (30) Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.

THE LIVING APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

3:25 It was obvious to those watching that this fourth person was supernatural.  We cannot be certain who the fourth man was.  It could have been an angel or a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ.  In either case, God sent a heavenly visitor to accompany these faithful men during their time of great trial.

25-30 God's deliverance of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendego was a great victory of faith for the Jews in captivity (not only in The Old Testament but also during the Holocaust, surely).  They were protected from harm, they were comforted in trial, God was glorified, and they were rewarded.  Let us determine to be true to God no matter how difficult the pressure of punishment (whether it is His good pleasure to deliver us or not).  God's protection transcends anything we could imagine.

27 These young men had been completely untouched by the fire and heat.  Only the rope that bound them had been burned.  NO HUMAN CAN BIND US IF GOD WANTS US TO BE FREE.  The power available to us is the same that delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and raised Christ from the dead.  Trust God in every situation.  There are eternal reasons for temporary trials; so be thankful that YOUR DESTINY IS IN GOD'S HANDS, NOT IN HUMAN HANDS.

28,29 Nebuchadnezzar was not making a commitment here to serve the Hebrews' God alone.  Instead, he was acknowledging that God is powerful, and he commanded his people not to speak against God.  Nebuchadnezzar didn't tell the people to throw away all the other gods, but to add this one to the list.

MY THOUGHTS

Have you ever stood for God, whether in principle or in deed?  In the past, I went through a time when I really wanted to get pregnant and have a child.  It was almost a tangible yearning.  About the same time, a very close friend of mine was going through the same thing, but she opted for fertility treatments.  I refused to take extreme steps to get pregnant.  I looked to God and gave it to Him....not my will, but His be done.  I ended up pregnant and my friend did, too.  The difference is the AMOUNT OF FAITH I ended up with in my coffers that I can spend during the rest of my life, knowing God heard my prayers and knew I would accept His decision and not impose mine.
May I have even more faith than I had then when it is my time to stand for Jesus or die.

I would love to hear of your experiences.  You may leave it in the comments section. If you don't want the world to see it, mark it "not for publish".

DANIEL 3: 13 - 23

DANIEL 3: 13 - 23

   (13) Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.  So these men were brought before the king, and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up?  (15) Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good.  But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace.  Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?"

   (16) Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.  If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king.  (18) But even if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

   (19) Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed.  He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual (20) and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.  (21) So, these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace.  (22)  The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, (23) and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
Daniel 3: 12-23 (NIV)

LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

3:13 Nebuchadnezzar had lost control.  How could anyone dare to disobey his commands?  As the supreme ruler of Babylonia, he expected absolute obedience.  But his pride had caused him to go beyond his own authority.  His demands were unjust and his reactions extreme.  If you find yourself angered when people don't follow your directions, ask yourself, "Why am I reacting?"  Your ego may be overly involved with your authority.

3:15 The three men were given one more chance.  Here are eight excuses they could have used to bow to the image and save their lives: (1) We will fall down but not actually worship the idol (2)We won't become idol worshipers, but will worship it this one time, and then ask God for forgiveness. (3) The king has absolute power, and we must obey him.  God will understand. (4) The king appointed us--we owe this to him. (5) This is a foreign land, so God will excuse us for following the customs of the land. (6) Our ancestors set up idols in God's temple! (7)We're not hurting anybody. (8) If we get ourselves killed and some pagans take our high positions, they won't help our people in exile!

3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were pressured to deny God, but they chose to be faithful to Him no matter what happened!  They trusted God to deliver them, but they were determined to be faithful regardless of the consequences.  If God always rescued those who were true to him, Christians would not need faith.  Their religion would be a great insurance policy, and there would be lines of selfish people ready to sign up.  We should be faithful to serve God whether He intervenes on our behalf or not.  Our eternal reward is worth any suffering we may have to endure first.

3:19 "His attitude toward them changed."  When we do something that offends non-Christians, their attitude toward us often changes because they are basically selfish.  Christians should be different, they should still love those who offend them.

MY THOUGHTS

I am sorry, but as I study King Nebuchadnezzar, all I can see is President Obama: furious when he doesn't get his way, persecuting Christians, punishing those who stand up to him rather than bow down.  I will not fall down and worship him, even if my God will not keep me from "the fiery furnace".  Oh, that my God would condition his heart, give him ears that hear, and eyes that see.  How can the leader of the free world find so many "wise men, enchanter, magician, and diviners" to serve in positions of power and no disciple of Jesus Christ!

Also, as I read this part of the Book of Daniel, I "hear" Dr. James MacArthur saying, "O king, live forever!"  I used to listen Walk in the Word on the radio.  He is still broadcasting....great expositor preacher.

FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP DANIEL 3: 8 - 12

FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP   DANIEL: 3: 8 - 12 (NIV)

    (8) At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews.  (9) They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "O king, live forever! (10) You have issued a decree, O king, that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold, (11) and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace.  (12) But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon--Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego--who pay no attention to you, O king.  They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up."  Daniel 3: 8-12 (NIV)

LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

We don't know if other Jews refused to fall down and worship the image, but these three were singled out as public examples.  Why didn't the three men just bow to the image and tell God that they didn't mean it?  They had determined NEVER to worship another god, and they courageously took their stand.  As a result, they were condemned and led away to be executed.  The men did not know whether they would be delivered from the fire; all they knew was that they would not fall down and worship an idol.  Are you ready to take a stand for God no matter what?  When you stand for God, you will stand out.  It may be painful, and it may not always have a happy ending.  Be prepared to say, "If He rescues me, or if He doesn't, I will serve only God."

MY THOUGHTS

It is written:  "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.  You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."  Deuteronomy 5: 7 - 10  Surely these Hebrew children had heard these teachings in the Synagogues before they were captured by the Babylonians.  What conviction!
It is also written that we are not to covet. Deuteronomy 5:21.  Those who do not know the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob may not be familiar with this command.  The children of The Living God should battle daily to keep it.  It is a condition of the heart that is not readily seen but is revealed by those who are guilty of it, none-the-less.
In these last days, I have prayed for the courage and wisdom, the conviction, to glorify my God by standing for Him.  "Everyone therefore who acknowledges Me before others, I also will acknowledge before My Father in heaven; but whoever denies Me before others, I also will deny before My Father in heaven."  Matthew 10: 31,33.
We will soon be required to take the "mark of the beast" or surely die.  Jesus said that "He who has the Son has life and will never die".  He said in Matthew 10: 28: "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

Have you ever been curious about where the number 666 came from and how it became associated with Satan?  Here is what I have found at www.seanet.com.: " The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar actually set up a golden statue of himself that was 60 cubits high and six cubits wide and demanded that his subjects worship it (Dan.3) when they heard six instruments playing. Therefore, the number 666 is here associated with the worship of man."

WORSHIP THE IMAGE OF GOLD DANIEL 3:1-7

WORSHIP THE IMAGE OF GOLD   DANIEL 3: 1-7

photo courtesy of Revelation:  Faith and Furnace
   (1) King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, ninety feet high and nine feet wide, and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.  (2) He then summoned the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials to come to the dedication of the image he had set up.  (3) So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.

   (4) Then the herald loudly proclaimed ,"This is what you are commanded to do, O peoples, nations and men of ever language:  (5) As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.  (6) Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace."

   (7) Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the peoples, nations and men of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

3:1  In Babylon's religious culture, statues were frequently worshiped.  Nebuchadnezzar hoped to use this huge image as a strategy to unite the nation and solidify his power by centralizing worship.  This gold image may have been inspired by his dream.  Instead of having only a head of gold, however, it was gold from head to toe.  Nebuchadnezzar wanted his kingdom to last forever.  When he made the statue Nebuchadnezzar showed that his devotion to Daniel's God was short-lived.  He neither feared nor obeyed the God who was behind the dream.

3:2 Satraps were governors over major divisions of the empire, serving as the chief representatives of the king.  Prefects were the governors over conquered cities.  Governors were civil administrators over provinces.

3:6 This blazing furnace was not a small oven for cooking dinner or heating a house; it was a huge industrial furnace that could have been used for baking bricks or smelting metals.  The temperatures were hot enough to assure that no one could survive.  The roaring flames could be seen leaping from its top opening, and a fiery blast killed the soldiers who went up to the large opening.

MY THOUGHTS

Have you ever witnessed to someone who just doesn't get it?  These four Hebrews were over all business in Babylon.  Do you think they were silent as the image of gold was being constructed?  Since they were publicly worshiping The One True God, surely they had something to say about an image of gold being built to be worshiped.  And being placed in a position of authority over the natural born "establishment", there must have been a lot of animosity toward them.

We are informed that not all seed is planted on fertile ground.  We read in Matthew 13: 5-9, that some of the seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.  Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil  It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.  But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.  Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.  Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.  He who has ears, let him hear.

Which kind of soil do you think King Nebuchadnezzar was?  Was there any in his kingdom who knew about Daniel and his God and believed?  We know that God's words never goes out and comes back empty.  Isaiah 55:11.

H. A. IRONSIDE COMMENTARY

Why do you think this particular story was told and recorded in the Book of Daniel, a prophetic book?  This event, though actual history, is a typical scene picturing the trial and deliverance of a faithful remnant of Daniel's people that is to take place in the Time of the End.  There will come a day when what the Lord Jesus calls "the Abomination of Desolation, spoken  of by Daniel the prophet," is going to be set up in Jerusalem by the Antichrist of the future.  (Matthew 24: 15)

After the Church has been caught away to heaven, at the close of this dispensation, the Jews will be deceived into owning the claims of a blasphemous impostor claiming to be the Messiah.  He is going to place the "Abomination that maketh desolate".  He will demand that all men worship the image that he sets up; and thus the scene of the plain of Dura will be reenacted.  In that day, as the past, a remnant among the Jews will refuse to own his claims or to obey his voice.  This will be the signal for the breaking out of the great tribulation, "the time of Jacob's trouble;" but many of the faithful shall be saved out of it, just as these three Hebrew young men were preserved by God in the midst of, and eventually delivered from, the furnace of fire.

OTHER KINGDOMS DANIEL 2: 39-49

OTHER KINGDOMS   DANIEL 2: 39-49

photo courtesy of Revelation: Faith and the Furnace

   (39) "After you, another kingdom will rise, inferior to yours.  Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.  (40) Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron--for iron breaks and smashes everything--and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.  (41) Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay.  (42) As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.  (43) And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.

   (44) "In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people.  It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.  (45) This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands--a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.

"The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.  The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy."

   (46) Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him.  The king said to Daniel, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery."
   (47) Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him.  He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.  (49) Moreover, at Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.  Daniel 2:39-49 (NIV)

LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

2:36  When Daniel says "we," he is referring to himself and his three friends.  Just as Daniel involved them in praying for God's help, he gave them credit when he presented the interpretation.  Because they helped Daniel in the prayer, he was careful to share the credit with them.

2:44 God's kingdom will never be destroyed.  If you are upset by threats of war and the prosperity of evil leaders, remember that God, not world leaders, decides the outcome of history.  (See the post at http://omaspolitics.blogspot.com about Korea.) Under God's protection, God's kingdom is indestructible.  Those who believe in God are members of His kingdom and are secure in Him.

2: 47 Nebuchadnezzar honored Daniel and Daniel's God.  If Daniel had taken the credit himself, the king would have honored only Daniel.  Because Daniel gave God the credit, the king honored both of them.  Part of our mission in this world is to show unbelievers what God is like.  We can do that by giving God credit for what He does in our lives.  Our acts of love and compassion may impress people and if we give God credit for our actions, they will want to know more about Him.  Give thanks to God for what He is doing in and through you.

2:49 After being named ruler over the whole province of Babylon and placed in charge of the wise men, Daniel requested that his companions.  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, be appointed as his assistants.  Daniel knew that he could not handle such an enormous responsibility without capable assistants, so he chose THE BEST MEN HE KNEW--his three Hebrew companions.  A COMPETENT LEADER never does all the work alone; he or she knows how to delegate and supervise.  Moses, Israel's greatest leader, shared the burden of administration with dozens of assistants.

MY THOUGHTS

I have been told by someone that he did not believe that God is involved in everyday activities, that He set up the world and left us to our own devices.  This is just one piece of evidence that God is involved in details.  He knows all things and is not bound by time.  The Book of Daniel was written more than five centuries before Jesus.  God revealed this to a pagan king through a Hebrew believer.  Praise to God for showing us centuries later that WE can trust HIM.

HEAD OF GOLD DANIEL 2: 31-38

HEAD OF GOLD  DANIEL 2: 31-38

   (31) "You looked, O king, and there before you stood a large statue--an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance.  (32) The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, (33) its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay.  (34) While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands.  It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them.  (35) Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were broken to pieces at the same time and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer.  The wind swept them away without leaving a trace.  But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.
   (36) "This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the King.  (37) You, O King, are the king of kings.  The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory; (38) in your hands He has placed mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds of the air.  Wherever they live, He has made you ruler over them all.  You are that head of gold.  Daniel 2:31-38  (NIV)

LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

(2:31) The head of gold on the statue in the dream represented Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of the Babylonian empire.  The silver chest and two arms represented the Medo-Persian empire, which conquered Babylon in 539 B.C.  The belly and thighs of bronze were Greece and Macedonia under Alexander the Great, who conquered the Medo-Persian empire in 334-330 B.C.  The legs of iron represented Rome, which conquered the Greeks in 63 B.C.  The feet of clay and iron represented the breakup of the Roman empire, when the territory Rome ruled divided into a mixture of strong and weak nations.  The type of metal in each part depicted the strength out of the political power it represented.  The rock cut out of the mountain depicted God's kingdom, which would be ruled eternally by the Messiah, the King of kings.  The dream revealed Daniel's God as the power behind all earthly kingdoms.
(2:36) When Daniel says "we," he is referring to himself and his three friends.  Just as Daniel involved them in praying for God's help, he gave them credit when he presented the interpretation.  Because they helped Daniel in the prayer, he was careful to share the credit with them.

MY THOUGHTS

King Nebuchanazzer was such an egocentric despot that he must have suspected that he was rightfully the head of gold, that any other metal would have probably cost Daniel his life.  After all, the Babylons had defeated Judah!  Who was greater in all the world?  Of course he had "dominion and power and might and glory", even if Daniel believes it all comes from Daniel's God, it still all belongs to King Nebuchanazzer.  No one is qualified to question this!
Then I remember that none of the soothsayers could tell the king what he dreamed or what it meant, but Daniel boldly asked for time that he might give the king what he asked for, that Daniel admits no one could possibly do.  THEN, Daniel went back and gathered his friends and they prayed to God for insight and wisdom.  DANIEL MUST HAVE BEEN CLOSE ENOUGH TO GOD THAT HE BELIEVED GOD WOULD ANSWER.  This is astonishing faith in a God that is not seen!  Oh, that I might have faith that strong!  God, give me faith like Daniel's.

IT'S NOT ABOUT ME DANIEL 2:24-30 (NIV)

IT'S NOT ABOUT ME
DANIEL 2

   (24) Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon.  Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him."
   (25) Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, "I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means."
   (26) The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), :Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?"
   (27) Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, (28) but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.  He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.  Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you lay on your bed are these:
   (29) As you were lying there, O king, your mind turned to things to come, and the Revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.  (30) As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than other living men, but so that you, O king, may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.  (NIV)

LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE COMMENTARY

2:24  Daniel did not use his success to promote his own self-interest.  He thought of others.  When striving to succeed or survive, remember the needs of others.
2:27-30  Before Daniel told the king anything else, he gave credit to God, explaining that he did not know the dream through his own wisdom but only because God revealed it.  How easily we take credit for what God does through us!   This robs God of the honor that He alone deserves.  Instead we should be like Daniel and point people to God so that we give Him the glory.

MY THOUGHTS

This is in line with my recent post on http://omaslife.blogspot.com related to the time God has given us and how we spend it.  We spend so much time pursuing things of this world and trying to convince the world about how important we are that we seldom invest our time serving others.  Nothing is about us, but everything is about God and His glory.
Personally, I am working to earn those crowns in this life which are stored in Heaven so I can give them to my Lord and Savior.
